Actors Claire Danes (left) and Damian Lewis won’t get to reprise their Golden Globes success from last year as ‘Homeland’ was completely shut out of the nominations.

If the Golden Globes are any indication, which we grant you is an open question, the era of "Homeland" may be ending.

Television's most acclaimed and honored show for its first two seasons came up with a great big handful of nothing in the 2014 Golden Globe Awards announced Thursday morning.

Nothing for the show, nothing for star Damien Lewis and, almost shockingly, no nomination for Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison.

"Homeland" wasn't alone, for what it's worth. Globes voters also apparently have moved past "Mad Men," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones" and "Justified," all of which also got nothing.

Saddest of all, so did "Sons of Anarchy."

Not much more than a day after "Sons" wrapped up a strong sixth season with a stunning season-ender that drew the show's highest finale audience ever, the Globes instead gave a best-drama nomination to "Masters of Sex," an ordinary show with a provocative title.

Globes voters also ignored the lead actors in "Sons," Katey Sagal and Charlie Hunnam. This stung because in 2011 the Globes had done the right thing and given the best-actress award to Sagal.

Now, alas, Globes voters have turned their back on "Sons." Hey, if that were what we wanted, we could watch the Emmys.

Elsewhere, the 2014 Globes have their familiar mix of cool quirky nominations and some that border on bizarre.

Fox's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" got a best-comedy nomination and a best-actor nod for Andy Samberg, which is unexpected and welcome. Maybe it can even help a good show survive.

Unsurprisingly, the Globes gave several nominations to the year's two marquee Netflix series, "House of Cards" and "Orange Is the New Black."

That's also a good thing, since "TV that's not on TV" is clearly part of the equation and both those shows are legitimate, not gimmicks.

It was a little surprising that "The Michael J. Fox" show got a best-comedy nomination, since the show isn't very good. But then, there weren't a whole lot of other great sitcoms to choose from  and Globes voters did resist nominating Robin Williams' comeback sitcom "The Crazy Ones."

If awards shows are going to keep nominating Lena Dunham's "Girls" for best comedy, though, one of them should bite the bullet and nominate "2 Broke Girls" instead.

Globes voters clearly felt obliged to nominate "Breaking Bad," as well as stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.

Since they ignored almost all the other dark cable dramas  and even the dark broadcast drama "The Following"  it will be interesting to see if, with that field to itself, "Breaking Bad" wins.

It will also be interesting to see if Tatiana Maslany wins best actress for "Orphan Black." She didn't win at the Emmys, but it's the kind of performance Globes voters love to honor and, in this case, she would deserve it.

The Globes still love traditional stars, which might help account for the nominations to Al Pacino ("Phil Spector"), Matt Damon, Michael Douglas ("Behind the Candelabra"), Jon Voight ("Ray Donovan"), Helen Mirren ("Phil Spector") and Jacqueline Bisset ("Dancing on the Edge").

And speaking of "Dancing on the Edge," it also got two other nominations, for best miniseries and best miniseries actor in Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A couple of wins for "Dancing," an underrated gem, would remind us that at their best, the Globes can be bold, not simply odd.
