It was a mingling of The Voice’s past and future on Tuesday’s jam-packed eliminations episode. Some of The Voice’s most successful alums stopped by for a musical visit, while host Carson Daly announced the season 5 finalists. James Wolpert and Cole Vosbury have been eliminated.
Season 4 finalists The Swon Brothers opened the show with a foot-stomping performance of “Later On.” The Team Blake duo told Carson that they’ve been signed to Arista Records.
In another installment of the ongoing “Confessionals” segment, the coaches and remaining artists tacked some holiday themes, including Cee Lo Green donning a wrapping-paper-like muumuu and everyone taking turns singing “Twelve Days of Christmas.” While the rest took a silly, casual approach to the carol, Christina Aguilera stole the show, turning the ordinary lyrics “partridge in a pear tree” into a Grammy-worthy performance.
Carson announced the first top five casualty would be James Wolpert, recipient of the final Twitter instant save. It was strange for Carson to switch up the usual order of “America has saved” reveals and begin the show on a low note.
Season 4 runner-up Michelle Chamuel performed her single “Go Down Singing.” Her stage started off simply with a basic red curtain backdrop, before the curtains rose and a drumline joined her onstage. There was lots of impassioned dancing and power-gesticulation from the bespectacled Team Usher star, so much so that it made me think that her blazer has the strongest button in all the textile land.
Carson took some Twitter questions from fans, one of whom was wondering if Adam Levine really was crying after Tessanne Chin’s rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” yesterday. “I might have been about to be tearing up,” said Adam. Is that just some People’s Sexiest Man Alive machismo talking?
The third Voice alum performance of the night came from season three winner Cassadee Pope, who sang “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart,” Afterwards, Carson and her former coach Blake Shelton presented her with a plaque for surpassing over half a million downloads with her single “Wasting All These Tears.”
Last season’s winner Danielle Bradbery continued the Team Blake victory train by singing “Never Like This.”
Before Carson made his final elimination announcement, it was down to Cole Vosbury and Will Champlin. I’m glad America voted Will through. Even though his Monday performance earned heaping praise from the coaches for showing an emotional core and onstage vulnerability, it was missing that spontaneous spark that I’m grown accustomed to seeing. I’m excited to see what he does for next week’s finale.
