Guardians of the Galaxy: watch the new trailer - Telegraph.co.uk

Marvel Studios have released the second full-length trailer for their upcoming superheroes in space epic Guardians of the Galaxy, due to hit cinemas this summer.

Set in the same universe as the Avengers franchise, the film is directed by James Gunn, the man behind the 2010 superhero comedy Super, and stars the Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt as space pilot, thief, and all-round bad boy, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

After stealing a priceless, powerful orb, coveted by Lee Pace's villainous Ronan – big, blue and encased entirely in body armour – Quill is forced to evade Ronan by reluctantly teaming up with a band of misfits.

The unlikely ensemble consists of the mysterious Gamora (a green Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (a formidable Dave Bautista), Rocket (a talking racoon with an X Factor-worthy sob-story, voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel as a talking tree).

The trailer also depicts Doctor Whos Karen Gillan, completed with a shaved head, as Ronan's sidekick, the part-human part-cyborg Nebula, while Marvel supervillain Thanos – last seen looking evil in the credits sequence of Avengers Assemble – will provide the fim's main threat, although the actor playing the role is yet to be revealed.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be in UK cinemas from July 31
