If you didn’t have tissues for the season five finale of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ you were definitely SOL. However, while it was super heartbreaking, I’m a strong believer that the shocking deaths that occured should permanent.
Once my tears dried up from the insanely emotional finale of The Vampire Diaries on May 15, I came to the realization that even though one of my favorite characters was gone, it actually was the right move for the show. [Warning: spoilers to follow!]
‘Vampire Diaries’: Damon’s Death Was A Good Thing
In case you missed it (and are still reading this to get spoiled!), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) officially died on the season five finale after going over to the other side to save their friends, including Stefan (Paul Wesley). I’ll just start by saying that the return of Alaric (Matt Davis) was a seriously pleasant surprise, but I was absolutely shocked that he was the last one to pass through Bonnie, leaving Damon for good.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Is Right To Bring Back Damon Next Season
His death, along with Bonnie’s (whose we did see coming since there was no way she would have survived that many people passing), was actually one of the most peaceful in the history of the show. There was no ripping his heart out, there was no neck snapping. Instead, he and Bonnie joined hands, closed their eyes and went to what I’d like to believe is Vampire Heaven. I mean, they saved all their friends, so you would think that would land them at the gates, right?
Throughout the five seasons of TVD, we’ve seen a ton of characters come and go — almost all of the characters are actually dead! However, they’ve almost all been brought back, either by magic or as ghosts. From Anna (Malese Jow), Vicky (Kayla Ewell) and Lexi (Arielle Kebbel), to Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Bonnie and well, all the Original vamps, we’ve seen far too many return from the dead.
But Damon and Bonnie’s death was different. They’re not on the Other Side — the Other Side is gone and so are they. If they return, it will it be pretty much mean that all of this season dedicated to saving the Other Side would have been pointless — since people can still return.
Damon’s Death Will Be A Good Thing For Elena
Before his death, Damon finally came to a good place with Elena (Nina Dobrev) — she respected his choice to sacrifice himself and she decided that if he was going to, then she was going to join. It was a huge moment of understanding for them as a couple and proved their love. So when she broke down (and hats off to Nina for the terrific crying) after his death, it was actually heartbreaking to watch because they were finally happy together.
But maybe that’s why it was the right time. They ended on a good note — he made her a better person and vice vesa. But they both knew that while their love was stronger than any other, when they were together, there was something “toxic” about it. Now, Elena will be able to be herself and show that she’s a strong woman (and vamp) without a Salvatore . . . or she’ll go back to Stefan.
The thought of not seeing Damon’s smirk every week on my screen makes me a little depressed, but at the end of the day, I think it’s a good move for The Vampire Diaries. What do you think, HollywoodLifers? I know you want to tell me!
