DETROIT -- Updates from Tigers-Royals:

Ninth inning
Game. Set. Match. The Tigers take opening day in dramatic fashion after Alex Gonzalez hit a walk-off single with one out in the ninth inning to beat the Royals, 4-3. Go figure. The 37-year-old plates the 23-year-old. Stay tuned to MLive.com for full coverage from today's game. Tigers 4, Royals 3.

Eighth inning
Miguel Cabrera drew a two-out walk, but was stranded on first after Victor Martinez popped out to shallow left. It'll be interesting to see who Brad Ausmus elects to put on the mound in the ninth with the game tied at 3-all. My guess? Joe Nathan. Tigers 3, Royals 3.

Seventh inning
Alex Gonzalez, the Tigers' 37-year-old newly acquired shortstop, tied the game at 3-all with an RBI triple. Yes, you read that right. Thirty-seven years old. Triple. It was the second triple of the inning after Austin Jackson hit a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch to cut the Royals' lead to one. Tigers 3, Royals 3.

Sixth inning
That should be it for Verlander, who exited the mound in the sixth with 105 pitches under his belt after an inning-ending strikeout by Nori Aoki. When Verlander walked down the staircase into the dugout, he didn't receive a handshake from Ausmus, but I suspect his day is done. Evan Reed is warming up in the bullpen, and I imagine he'll take over in the seventh. Royals 3, Tigers 1.

Fifth inning
Here's your daily reminder: Do not test Alex Gordon's arm. Nick Castellanos committed his first baserunning gaffe this season when he tried to stretch a single into a double after a liner to the wall in left field. Bad idea. Gordon gunned him down. The play could've been challenged, but it was pretty apparent that Castellanos was out by a mile. Royals 3, Tigers 1.

Fourth inning
Panic in Panic Town! Verlander worked himself into a fourth-inning jam, walking three, including Omar Infante with the bases loaded. It was a 33-pitch inning for Verlander, who is charged with only one of the three runs scored. It should be noted that nine of his 33 pitches were thrown after a costly two-out error by Alex Gonzalez, who drew a hearty amount of boos. Royals 3, Tigers 1.

Third inning
Tigers go down in order, 1-2-3, for a scoreless third. Ian Kinsler sent a fastball from Shields to deep right field, but it died before the warning track. It probably would've cleared the wall at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Tigers 1, Rangers 0.

Second inning
Detroit is on the board early after Victor Martinez crushed a 1-0 pitch off James Shields over the wall in left-center to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It's Martinez's first career homer off Shields and his first homer from the cleanup spot since 2010. As MLB.com's Jason Beck noted, Martinez didn't hit his first home run last year until May 4 -- spanning 125 plate appearances. Tigers 1, Royals 0.

First inning
Verlander tossed a scoreless first and consistently hit 92 mph with his four-seamer. It'll likely touch the mid 90s later in the game when his arm begins to warm up. He gave up a two-out double to Eric Hosmer, but it looked like Austin Jackson got a bad jump on it and probably should've caught it. Tigers 0, Royals 0.

How things got ugly between ABC and Josh Elliott - CNNMoney

josh elliot

Josh Elliott's departure from "Good Morning America" for NBC has drummed up the kind of behind-the-scenes drama ABC had previously avoided.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Elliott was the news anchor on "GMA" and the presumed heir apparent to George Stephanopoulos.

On Sunday, he notified ABC that he had accepted a job at the network's arch-rival, NBC. People at both networks immediately leaked the news -- ABC, to imply that "GMA" would be better off without Elliott, and NBC, to celebrate his arrival and destabilize "GMA."

This is how the morning show wars are fought. But Elliott's fork-in-the-road moment has drummed up the kind of behind-the-scenes drama that ABC had successfully avoided.

ABC has handled news about its cast with compassion: Robin Roberts battled cancer, and the network kept her co-host chair warm; Sam Champion decided to leave the show, and the cast threw him a party.

With Elliott, it's a different story.

Watch: Coming soon - TV on your phone

Elliott is handsome, charming and widely perceived to be a rising star in television broadcasting. And a lot of the credit for his rise goes to Ben Sherwood, the president of ABC News, who recruited Elliott for "GMA" after taking control of the news division in 2010.

In interviews for my book, "Top of the Morning," Sherwood and Elliott said they bonded during two long dinners, where they talked about broadcasting fundamentals, baseball and family.

Elliott, who had been a co-host of ESPN's "SportsCenter," joined "GMA" in 2011. He and another new cast member, Lara Spencer, injected new energy into the ABC show. "GMA" even ended the "Today" show's 16-year winning streak in the ratings. Elliott's star rose higher still.

But as time passed, Elliott and Sherwood's paths began to diverge.

As Elliott's three-year contract approached its end, his representatives held informal talks with NBC about roles for him at NBC Sports, on programs like "Sunday Night Football," and at NBC News, on the "Today" show.

Sherwood and others at ABC were aware of NBC's interest, but believed they could keep Elliott in the fold.

Negotiations between the two sides dragged on. People on ABC's side believed Elliott was acting greedy, seeking a huge raise. People on Elliott's side thought ABC was incapable of recognizing his worth.

Meantime, Sherwood received a huge promotion. On March 24 he was named the next president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, which includes the ABC network, cable channels like ABC Family and The Disney Channel and the company's television studio.

The first accomplishment listed in the news release about Sherwood's promotion was "driving 'Good Morning America' to #1."

When The Hollywood Reporter asked Sherwood about the negotiations with Elliott, Sherwood said, "We love Josh. We hope Josh is going to stay for a very long time."

Related: Get ready for 'over-the-top' TV

But then Elliott told Sherwood on Sunday that he was accepting an offer from NBC Sports, one that opens the door to the "Today" show for him.

Sherwood, who had already lined up Amy Robach as Elliott's potential replacement, announced Robach's promotion within minutes.

"I want to thank Josh for his many contributions to GMA and ABC News. Later in the week, we will bid him farewell," Sherwood said in a memo.

Or maybe not.

Elliott was M.I.A. on Monday morning's show, and the other hosts talked about him as if he was already gone. "He is going back to his roots," Stephanopoulos said. He and the other "GMA" hosts effusively praised Elliott, and Elliott responded in kind on Twitter.

But behind the scenes, ABC and Elliott's representatives were fighting over the terms of his exit, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The plans for a thoughtful sendoff are now in flux, people at ABC acknowledged on Monday. "GMA" may end up broadcasting a "greatest hits tape" of Elliott's tenure on the show, without him there to watch it.

The abrupt departure of an anchor, without any sign-off, is exceedingly rare in television news.

For ABC, the risk is that this public break-up will cause viewers to choose sides between "GMA" or Elliott.

With Elliott gone, Stephanopoulos is the only man at the "GMA" anchor desk, joined by four women. His contract is believed to expire at the end of this year.

Sherwood intends to add another man to the morning show's mix as early as this week, something hinted at in his memo about Elliott.

A spokesman for ABC News declined to comment on Monday. Elliott did not respond to a request for comment.

But one of his Twitter messages on Monday read, "A monumental thanks to Disney/ABC TV Group president Ben Sherwood, without whom three of the best years of my life would never have been." To top of page

Deadline-time signups for Covered California jam systems - SFGate

A last-minute surge of Californians trying to sign up for health insurance before Monday's midnight deadline slowed down the state's enrollment website and lengthened wait times for people who called the agency's toll-free number for help.

More than 155,000 people signed up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act from March 24 through 2 a.m. Monday, pushing total enrollment in the state health exchange past 1.2 million Californians. As of 5 p.m. Monday, Covered California's website had 420,000 unique visitors for the day and 7.7 million page views, more than four times the agency's previous busiest day on Dec. 23.

The federal government had problems of its own Monday as its troubled website, HealthCare.gov, became so overwhelmed that it twice stopped taking new applicants. Government officials blamed the problem on a technical glitch that they said was resolved later in the day, but users continued to report difficulties.

California, which runs its own exchange, did not appear to have that level of problems.

In a news conference Monday, Peter V. Lee, Covered California's executive director, said people who called in to the agency for help were being kept on hold for an average of more than 40 minutes, despite the recent hiring of 250 new customer service representatives.

"While we might have preferred they signed up earlier, we are happy to see so many Californians getting the message," he said.

Because of the delays, some prospective enrollees may be asked to complete the rest of the sign-up process later, he said.

At the Oakland Asian Cultural Center in Chinatown on Monday afternoon, more than 100 people were waiting for in-person help.

Rosa Ramirez, 59, said she drove from San Jose for the event, which was sponsored by SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West.

2-month struggle

Ramirez is unemployed but used to have private insurance. She said she had been trying unsuccessfully for two months to sign up for coverage online or by phone with Covered California, and had trouble finding a live person to help.

"They scare you. They're going to fine you," said Ramirez. "How much are they going to fine me? How much are they going to charge me for insurance? That's what I need to know."

Kay Roebuck of Alameda waited until the last minute to sign up because she never expected to need to. Roebuck, a licensed vocational nurse studying to be a registered nurse, had a job at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center until late last week.

Roebuck, 49, lost her job benefits and was scrambling to secure coverage.

"Now we're part of America - no insurance and no jobs," she said.

Officially, those who are uninsured had until 11:59 p.m. Monday to enroll for health coverage, but anyone who began the application process by opening an account and making it past the first few steps will have until April 15 to complete the process and choose a plan.

Penalties kick in

But people who had not made an attempt to buy health care coverage by the Monday deadline will face financial penalties. The tax penalty is $95 for an individual for the year, or up to 1 percent of income above the tax filing threshold of $10,000 - whichever is greater.

The Monday deadline does not apply to those eligible for Medicaid, the health program for the poor known as Medi-Cal in California. They can sign up at any time. People who discover they are not eligible for Medi-Cal may qualify for subsidies to help them buy private coverage through the state exchange.

After Tuesday, some people may still be able to sign up for health insurance coverage, but only under special circumstances known as a "qualifying life event." This includes losing a job, along with employer-provided health insurance; getting a new job; getting married; having children; or moving to a new area with different coverage options.

For more information, call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 or visit the agency's website at www.coveredca.com.

Texas Rangers give up Opening Day record for runs in 14-10 loss to Philadelphia - Dallas Morning News (blog)

ARLINGTON – On Opening Day, the Texas Rangers came back from a six-run deficit, something they didn’t do at all last year only to lose when scoring double-figure runs, something they hadn’t done since 2010.

First-time starter Tanner Scheppers allowed seven runs and a patched-together middle of the bullpen also allowed seven runs in a 14-10 loss to Philadelphia. It was the most runs the Rangers have ever allowed in an opener.

The Rangers spent the end of spring scrambling to fill out the starting rotation and the back of the bullpen, but had to leave the middle of the bullpen to whatever bodies remained. That showed. The bullpen trio of Pedro Figueroa, Alexi Ogando and Shawn Tolleson allowed seven runs to turn a big comeback into a big deficit. It was the first time the Rangers’ bullpen had allowed seven earned runs in a game since July 30, 2012 in a loss to the Los Angeles Angeles.

The Rangers had not lost when scoring 10 runs since blowing a 9-3 lead at Toronto in a Rich Harden start on May 14, 2010. They had won 63 consecutive games since when scoring at least 10 runs.

• The arms: RHP Tanner Scheppers became the first Rangers opening day starter since Rick Helling in 1999 to last fewer than five innings. Helling lasted three in that opener, then went on to pitch 219 innings for the season. … LHP Pedro Figueroa, who entered the season with 18 walks in 24.2 career innings, walked No. 8 hitter Cody Asche to put the go-ahead run in scoring position in the fifth, then allowed a two-run pinch-hit double to John Mayberry Jr. …The Rangers allowed 11 of the 14 runs to score after there were two outs.

• The bats: RF Alex Rios hustled on a grounder to short that Phillies shortstop SS Jimmy Rollins didn’t charge to give the second inning legs. … C J.P. Arencibia, who walked just 18 times last year, walked following Rios to load the bases. … 2B Josh Wilson’s bases-clearing double in the second tied his career single-game RBI total. … With the bases loaded and nobody out, Arencibia bounced into a double play in the seventh. … The Rangers got a pair of pinch hits in the game from Michael Choice and Jim Adduci. … The top three spots in the Rangers’ revamped lineup – OF Shin-Soo Choo, SS Elvis Andrus and 1B Prince Fielder – combined to go 2-for-14 with a walk.

• The gloves: The Rangers shifted Philadelphia’s Cody Asche, a left-handed hitter, off the line in the second. He beat it with a squibbed double past the empty spot at third for the first run-scoring hit in a six-run inning. … RHP Tanner Scheppers escaped a third-inning jam by tracking chasing down a Cody Asche dribbler and firing to first for the final out. The inning also included Elvis Andrus throwing out Ryan Howard at home. … RF Alex Rios made a leaping catch in the gap to prevent the fifth inning from becoming worse. … SS Elvis Andrus was a bit lazy in picking up a deflected infield single and it allowed Dominic Brown to rush home from third for an extra run.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Philadelphia Second: Tanner Scheppers couldn’t get his fastball down, leading to three-walks. With a chance to minimize the damage, he allowed a full-count single to Ben Revere and then a grand slam to Jimmy Rollins. Philadelphia 6, Rangers 0

Rangers second: A gap double by Adrian Beltre, an infield single by Alex Rios and a patient walk by J.P Arencibia set the stage for a run-scoring single by Leonys Martin and a bases-clearing double by Josh Wilson. Philadelphia 6, Rangers 4

Rangers third: Prince Fielder led off with a single through the over-shifted right side and Adrian Beltre followed with his second consecutive hit. Alex Rios homered to left center. Rangers 7, Philadelphia 6

Philadelphia fourth: Chase Utley singled home Ben Revere, who had singled and stole second, with two outs to tie the game again. Rangers 7, Philadelphia 7

Philadelphia fifth: Pedro Figueroa allowed a single, a walk and then a two-run pinch hit double to John Mayberry Jr. Philadelphia 9, Rangers 7

Rangers fifth: Leonys Martin, who had only 10 RBIs against lefties in the second half of last season, had his second run-scoring hit of the game against Cliff Lee to drive home J.P. Arencibia. Philadelphia 9, Rangers 8

Philadelphia sixth: With Alexi Ogando up and warming, manager Ron Washington let lefty Pedro Figueroa face right-hander Marlon Byrd with two outs. Byrd homered on the first pitch. The Phillies went on to score three more times against Figueroa and Ogando. Philadelphia 13, Rangers 8

Rangers seventh: The Rangers scored once when J.P. Arencibia bounced into a bases-loaded double play and again on a pinch-hit single by Jim Adduci, but Elvis Andrus, representing the go-ahead run, bounced into an inning-ending fielder’s choice. Philadelphia 13, Rangers 10

Philadelphia eighth: No. 8 hitter Cody Asche delivered his third hit of the game: A homer off Allen’s Shawn Tolleson. Philadelphia 14, Rangers 10

Katherine Webb: Swimsuit Model Engaged To AJ McCarron - Hollywood Life

Katherine Webb, former Miss Alabama and current slammin’ hottie has been locked down by football player AJ McCarron — sorry, gentlemen. And her ring is huge!

Katherine Webb, 24, is now engaged to former University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, 23. Surely disappointing legions of admirers, Katherine tweeted out the news to her 300k+ followers on March 28 — along with a photo of the enormous rock. Click through to take a look and read all about their relationship!

Swimsuit Model Katherine Webb Engaged To Quarterback AJ McCarron

College sweethearts Katherine and AJ have been together since 2012 and got engaged in Gulf Shores, Alabama — AJ even designed the huge sparkler himself! Jealous, ladies?

While Katherine Webb was crowned Miss Alabama in 2012, her claim to fame was during one of AJ’s football games in Jan. 2013 when ESPN cameras spotted her looking beautifully pensive as she watched AJ do his thing.

Her beauty scrambled the brain of ESPN announcer Brent Musberger, 73, who said, on live TV, “what a beautiful woman! Wow! Whoa!” Pretty innocuous as far as comments about a woman’s beauty go, and Katherine agreed that it wasn’t such a huge deal.

Katherine Webb: AJ Is ‘A Guy I Can See Myself Having A Real Future With’

Reports surfaced that AJ was jealous of his suddenly-famous girlfriend and was encouraging her to drop out of interviews — which is kind of insane. Later, Katherine told TMZ that her “decision to cancel the interviews was not made at A.J.’s request,” that she didn’t want their relationship to be about “celebrity status,” and that “he’s a guy [she] can see [herself] having a real future with.”

    Well, she wasn’t wrong!

AJ has since graduated from the University of Alabama and with the upcoming NFL draft in June, fans are saying that he is likely to get into the coveted league. Meanwhile, Katherine has had a pretty fruitful career as a swimsuit model, her most notable recent appearance being in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2013. She was also a contestant on Splash, the celebrity diving show, but had to withdraw in its fifth week due to a back injury.

All the best to Katherine and AJ! Congratulations again to them both.

So, HollywoodLifers, are you happy Katherine and AJ? Or are you a teensy bit jealous that AJ has locked it down? Vote and comment!

Nick Markakis uncertain for Opening Day and other Orioles notes - Baltimore Sun (blog)

Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis might not play in Monday’s regular-season opener at Camden Yards against the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox because of lingering neck stiffness.

Manager Buck Showalter said Markakis, who was scratched from the starting lineup for the club’s exhibition game at Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, was feeling better Sunday.

But Showalter said Markakis could sit Monday so he can receive two additional days — the Orioles have a scheduled off day Tuesday — to see if it would help to eradicate the discomfort. The club would rather give him days off now as a precaution than risk the stiffness developing into something more serious in the future.

“He’s still a little sore,” Showalter said Sunday. “Hopefully, it will get better. I’ve got two lineups, one with him in it and one without him in it tomorrow. There’s some thought of him getting the benefit of another day with it. … I was hoping it would manage a little bit overnight better. It’s much better. We’ll see if it’s enough to play tomorrow.”

The longest-tenured Orioles player on this year’s roster, Markakis has played in eight straight Opening Day games for the club. He entered late in the 2006 opener before starting the past seven years.

Markakis started feeling the stiffness on the team’s flight to Norfolk on Saturday morning.

“It’s loosening up little by little,” Showalter said. “He was fine when we got on the plane, so we’ll see.”

Last March, Markakis dealt with a slightly herniated disk in his neck and doctors told him that sudden flare-ups were possible.

    Young, Meek added to roster

While finalizing their 25-man roster for Opening Day, the Orioles made a pair of moves Sunday afternoon to clear space on their 40-man roster for outfielder Delmon Young and right-hander Evan Meek, who were both nonroster invitees to spring training.

The club placed right-hander Edgmer Escalona — who was sidelined in early March with right shoulder inflammation — on the 60-day disabled list and designated left-hander Mike Belfiore for assignment.

Both Meek and Young signed later in the offseason to a minor league deal. Young signed during the team’s minicamp in Sarasota, Fla., in the middle of January, and Meek signed shortly after throwing a bullpen session at Camden Yards during the Orioles’ FanFest event Feb. 1.

“Coming in two months ago, I told myself I want to pitch here,” said Meek, who made the National League All-Star team in 2010 with the Pittsburgh Pirates but dealt with shoulder issues and didn’t pitch in the major leagues last season. “I want to be a part of this club, but there were a lot of things that had to happen. … When you come from what happened to me, where you’re struggling to find a job, you’re grateful just to have a jersey on your back.”

Young, a 28-year-old former No. 1 overall pick, said he’s finally completely healthy after microfracture surgery on his ankle before the 2013 season.

“It was good from the first time I met Buck in mini[camp] workouts,” Young said. “He just said, ‘Show us what you’ve got, and if you are the right guy for our team, you have a chance to make it.’ So I was finally healthy, where I didn’t have to report to the training room and do rehab work instead. … I could come in here and show people I'm fully healthy.”

    No official word on closer

Right-hander Tommy Hunter said he hasn’t been told that he will start the season as the closer, but he also said that he didn’t expect an announcement.

“I don’t see him doing that,” Hunter said about Showalter officially designating a closer. “I’ve never seen him do that. Guys just fall into place where he uses them. I don’t think he uses any specific words, like, ‘You’re this guy,’ or, ‘You’re that guy.’ It’s just assumed after a while, who’s who. I guess we’ll wait and see.”

It’s not a secret, however, that Hunter is the leading candidate to replace Jim Johnson, who was traded to the Oakland Athletics in December.

“It’s going to play itself out. … [Monday] night hopefully,” said Hunter, a former starter who has never been a full-time closer. “We’re going to go out and play baseball. You just throw the ball when you get it.

Breaking down the Final Four matchups - USA TODAY

NEW YORK — Coming off Connecticut's most lopsided loss of its season, coach Kevin Ollie was looking for a spark earlier this month.

It was a down time, Ollie thought, and when your team is down, you get your players to bond as brothers. So he showed them tape from the Huskies' 65-64 win over Florida back on Dec. 2.

"I just wanted to show them, you know, Florida was No. 1 and we can beat No. 1," Ollie said then. "We have already proved it. I wanted to show them their intensity on the defensive end. The offensive end, we were sharing the ball."

SUPERLATIVES: Best of the second weekend

FLORIDA: Success didn't come easy for Gators

It worked. Connecticut won its next two games, fell again to Louisville in the conference tournament final, and won its next four games to reach a surprising Final Four.

That same Florida team awaits the Huskies in Dallas this weekend at the Final Four. Florida vs. Connecticut will be the first national semifinal, tipping off at 6:09 p.m. ET Saturday, followed by Wisconsin vs. Kentucky. Florida is the lone No. 1 seed to reach the Final Four.

"We're going to see what happens against them (again)," Ollie said Sunday. "I love Billy Donovan, what he does with his program, and he's just an amazing coach. And their team is amazing and it's going to take 40 full (minutes) again."

When he says a full 40 minutes, he means every last second. Connecticut won the Dec. 2 game on a Shabazz Napier buzzer-beater, and it is the last game Florida lost. The Gators were without their best perimeter defender, senior Scottie Wilbekin, for the game's final minutes due to an injury. This time around, the Wilbekin vs. Napier matchup — hopefully, 40 minutes of it — will be the most compelling individual matchup of the Final Four.

KENTUCKY: Wildcats' toughness scarier than their talent

WISCONSIN: Stop acting surprised, Badgers can win it all

Florida, the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament, will likely be favored in each of its remaining games. The Gators do have a rather interesting path to the championship, however.

In order to win the title — which would be Donovan's third — they'll have to go through the last team to beat them (Connecticut), and either the only other team to beat them this season (Wisconsin) or a team they've beaten three times this season (Kentucky).

Florida has won 30 straight games, but its last loss was to Connecticut on this Shabazz Napier buzzer-beater back on Dec. 2.(Photo: David Butler II, USA TODAY Sports)

The Wildcats are the most surprising team in the group, a No. 8 seed from the Midwest Region that entered the postseason after a disappointing stretch that included losses to the likes of South Carolina and Arkansas.

But the Wildcats boast a collection of freshman talent that many analysts compare to that of Michigan's Fab Five, which meant a deep NCAA tournament run was never out of the question — if the individual talent turned into a team.

The kids grew up just in time, as Kentucky reeled off wins against Kansas State and three of last year's Final Four teams — Wichita State, Louisville and Michigan — to reach its second Final Four in three years. And, more importantly, this Kentucky team is living up to its wild expectations.

CONNECTICUT: Huskies channel more Garden magic

NCAA BRACKET HUB: Latest scores, news and notes

"It's great," Kentucky sophomore Alex Poythress said. "That's what we came to do and what we wanted to do. Everybody has aspirations and dreams of coming to the Final Four, and now we are here. Now we are trying to get to the national title game."

The Wildcats' opponent, Wisconsin, reached the Final Four for the first time under coach Bo Ryan.

Seven-footer Frank Kaminsky was the main reason why, as the big man scored 28 points against Arizona. He's a threat along the perimeter as well as in the paint, which should create a fascinating matchup when he goes up against Kentucky's big, bruising frontcourt.

"We're going in a little bit blind," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "But I'm going to tell you, we've got good skill. We've got good size. We've got good toughness. We've got tougher through football practices.

"Now they're playing a little bit different. We're able to make tougher shots when we're getting bumped and grabbed a little bit."

Sam Smith Dazzles in 'SNL' Debut

British crooner performs 'Stay With Me' and 'Lay Me Down'

Sam Smith brought out a gospel choir to support him in his Saturday Night Live debut last night, in an episode hosted by Louis C.K.. The British R&B crooner opened his set with "Stay With Me," backed by the choir, along with a full band and string section, through the arrangement left enough room for his buttery vocals to take center stage. The song is the latest single off Smith's upcoming debut LP, In the Lonely Hour, due out May 26th on Capitol.

For his second number, Smith showed off what he can do standing largely on his own, with little more than spare keys and a cello accompanying him on "Lay Me Down." Between the two songs and their emphasis on his powerful voice, Smith made the most of his high-profile opportunity to draw in a wider U.S. audience after breaking out with his contributions to Disclosure's 2012 track "Latch" and Naughty Boy's "La La La."

Fire-Plagued Tesla Cleared by Feds - Wired

After investigating two fires that consumed a pair of Tesla Model S sedans last year, the National Traffic Safety Administration released a report stating that it hasn’t found a “defect trend” that would indicate the electric sedan is unsafe. But that’s not stopping Tesla from upgrading the underbody armor of its cars.

According to a statement from NHTSA, “Tesla’s revision of vehicle ride height and addition of increased underbody protection should reduce both the frequency of underbody strikes and the resultant fire risk. A defect trend has not been identified. Accordingly, the investigation is closed.”

The two fires in the U.S. started after drivers ran over debris in the road. In one case, a trailer hitch and in the other, an unidentified metal object. In both situations, the objects punctured the lithium-ion battery pack that spans the bottom of the Model S, causing a thermal runaway event that resulted in a fire.

After investigating the events, Tesla Motors sent out an over-the-air update to the Model S sedans on the road that would raise the ride height of the EV at highway speeds, reducing the chances of striking an object on the road. And now Tesla is taking it a step further with a new array of underbody armor.

Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk took to Medium to explain the new triple shield that would “bring this risk down to virtually zero to give Model S owners complete peace of mind.”

The new armor starts with a hollow aluminum bar that reduces the force of impact or deflects the object completely. Rather than the object going into the battery, the bar would send it toward the plastic underbody tray and the front trunk liner.

The second shield is a titanium plate–the same grade used in aerospace and military applications–to protect the battery. In the unlikely event that it fails, a third barrier of solid aluminum mounted at a shallow angle will deflect the object and absorb the energy of the impact.

The new armor has been fitted to all Model S sedans manufactured since March 6 and will be available as a free upgrade to current Model S owners. Tesla claims that the new armor won’t have any impact on the ride or handling of the Model S, and will result in a 0.1 percent impact on driving range.

Tesla conducted 152 tests of the new shields and, according to Musk, engineers found they “prevented any damage that could cause a fire or penetrate the existing quarter inch of ballistic grade aluminum armor plate that already protects the battery pack.”

And just to show off, they’ve released a few GIFs of the new armor in action. Enjoy the destruction.

Richard Sherman stands behind former Little League teammate DeSean Jackson - USA TODAY

The Philadelphia Eagles strange, sudden release of DeSean Jackson has quickly become one of the biggest stories of the offseason, and Jackson’s friends and colleagues are lining up to offer their support.

Long before his release, the Eagles were shopping Jackson on the trade market. According to reports by NJ.com, there were behind-the-scenes issues, and the Eagles were concerned about Jackson’s relationships with gang members. Shortly after those reports were published Friday, the Eagles cut ties with the Pro Bowl wide receiver. Jackson released a statement afterward denying any involvement in gang activity, and the LAPD confirmed that he was not a target in any investigations.

A number of fans and fellow players have come to Jackson’s defense following his release. Former Giants running back Derrick Ward wrote a passionate series of tweets ripping the Eagles and ESPN for the way they handled the situation. Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who also grew up in Los Angeles, shared an old photo of his little league team, which featured two future NFL stars. Sherman’s message: “No one should be judged by the actions of others.”
