Sam Smith Dazzles in 'SNL' Debut
British crooner performs 'Stay With Me' and 'Lay Me Down'
Sam Smith brought out a gospel choir to support him in his Saturday Night Live debut last night, in an episode hosted by Louis C.K.. The British R&B crooner opened his set with "Stay With Me," backed by the choir, along with a full band and string section, through the arrangement left enough room for his buttery vocals to take center stage. The song is the latest single off Smith's upcoming debut LP, In the Lonely Hour, due out May 26th on Capitol.

For his second number, Smith showed off what he can do standing largely on his own, with little more than spare keys and a cello accompanying him on "Lay Me Down." Between the two songs and their emphasis on his powerful voice, Smith made the most of his high-profile opportunity to draw in a wider U.S. audience after breaking out with his contributions to Disclosure's 2012 track "Latch" and Naughty Boy's "La La La."
