A 16-year-old identified as Maren Sanchez, a high-school junior at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut, was fatally stabbed in the hallway today, hours before prom. The suspect, a 16-year-old male, was arrested; according to ABC News, Sanchez "apparently refused a boy's offer to attend prom tonight as his date." Although the motive has not been officially confirmed, police said "that students told them there was a possible dispute over the dance."
Last month, Sanchez posted a photo to the JLHS Prom Dresses 2014 Facebook group along with the caption, "Yay so excited!!" The dance has been postponed.
Milford School Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Feser said Sanchez "just a wonderful young woman," the Hartford Courant reports. "She was an athlete, she was in the National Honor Society. She helped out with other athletic teams. She was very well respected and liked," said Feser. On her YouTube channel, Sanchez can be seen singing. According to a classmate, "Everything you're doing right in high school she was doing."
Update, 1:12 p.m.: The Daily News has more disturbing details:
The violence erupted after Chris Plaskon, also 16, shoved his ex, Maren Sanchez, down the stairs and tried to choke her inside Jonathan Law High School in Milford about 7:15 a.m., friends told the Daily News.
The boy - using a kitchen knife he brought from home - then stabbed Sanchez in her neck, witnesses and cops said.
