Eugenie Bouchard gets hero's welcome in Montreal as Canada celebrates its ... - Daily Mail

By Mike Dawes

Eugenie Bouchard was given a hero's welcome as she arrived in her hometown of Montreal following her Wimbledon final defeat to Petra Kvitova.

The first Canadian to make a Grand Slam final was blown away by her Czech Republic opponent Kvitova, who won her second All England Club final 6-3 6-0 in under an hour.

The manner of the defeat was forgotten by Bouchard's fans though, who chose to celebrate her achievement of making the decider on Saturday rather than dwell on the result.

Bouchard wore loose-fitting yoga attire as she made her way through the terminal in Montreal, stopping to pose for photos with supporters.

As she carried an over-sized designer handbag, her mother Julie LeClair was left to look after a trolley of luggage.

Eugenie's mum also had the Wimbledon runner-up trophy slung over her shoulder - it is after all the prize her daughter told Twitter she didn't want.

Going into the tournament Bouchard had won more Grand Slam matches than any other women on the tour this year after her semi-final exits at the Australian and French Opens - amazingly the past fortnight was just her sixth major tournament as a senior.

It was a huge fortnight for Canada, with Bouchard's compatriot Milos Raonic making his first Wimbledon semi-final before falling to Roger Federer.

The finals provided a double disappointment for Bouchard, who was clearly supporting Federer against Novak Djokovic before the Swiss master fell in a five-set epic.

After tweeting that she hoped to 'land to good news' about Federer she expressed her sympathy for him.

'Pilot was updating me during the flight... Congrats to Novak! But heartbroken for Roger #trophybuddies,' she posted to her 285,000 followers.
